City and Guilds Level 3 in Patchwork and Quilting
I’m delighted you are considering taking a City & Guilds Level 3 qualification with us. It’s a great way to develop your existing patchwork and quilting skills and to explore new techniques and ideas.
Courses are held at Cardinal Newman School, The Upper Dr, Hove BN3 6ND, where we use both classroom and art room space. Free parking.
I’m also happy to report that last year the BFaTS achieved excellent results again with two thirds of our students achieving a Distinction, the highest grade for a City and Guild qualification.
Two of my Certificate students have were juried into the City & Guilds Quilters Guild Bursary Award Gallery at the 2018 Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. This could be you next time!
City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Patchwork and Quilting.
The next course will begin on 2nd & 3rd October 2019, 10 am – 4 pm and then fortnightly for a total of 32 session spread over 2 years and a one week summer school in June 2019.
The Level 3 Certificate course is a two year course of study during which you will explore a broad range patchwork, appliqué and quilting techniques as well as developing your design skills through practical exercises. You will have the opportunity to dye and print your own fabrics, carry out research and develop designs for your finished items.
It is held at Cardinal Newman School, The Upper Dr, Hove BN3 6ND. There is plenty of free parking on site.
City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Patchwork and Quilting.
I will announce new dates for this course once it has been confirmed by City & Guilds.
This is the most in-depth course in patchwork, appliqué and quilting where we will explore more advanced and innovative techniques and develop your design skills further.
You will use a focussed theme of your choice to inspire designs for the following
- Students will investigate a range of traditional and innovative techniques to produce a portfolio of experimental samples that use a wide variety of materials.
- You will produce a folio of dyeing and printing techniques including colour studies and breakdown printing.
- A quilt or wall hanging
- A Miniature quilt
- Design work based on mathematical progressions and sequences
- A collection of fabrics and materials
- An illustrated study of the developments within patchwork and quilting

At the Festival of Quilts 2017 two students were juried into the City & Guilds Quilters Guild Bursary Award Gallery. Jane Spedding and Kelly Cheelsey received very favourable comments from the judges about their work and it was a great opportunity for them to have their work seen by so many visitors to the show.
